Tommy Thompson's painting, "Springtime at Carnton," is one of seven paintings being considered for promotional coverage of the Chestnut Group/Carnton Art Show and Sale, July 15-17, 2011. The voting deadline is Tuesday, May 3, 2011.

Springtime at Carnton


Tommy Thompson created "Springtime at Carnton" after visiting the famous Civil War hospital site in Franklin, TN. Carnton was the largest field hospital for the Confederacy and was made memorable by Robert Hicks in his well-known book, The Widow of the South. The Chestnut Group of Nashville, TN, will be painting on the plantation for a few months in preparation for a benefit show and sale to be held July 14-17, 2011 at Carnton Plantation in Franklin, TN.

Tommy Thompson To Focus on Values in Chestnut Group Workshop


Tommy Thompson will be teaching a plein air oil painting workshop on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, for the Chestnut Group of Nashville, TN. Thompson will be conducting his one-day workshop from 9 to 4 p.m. on a beautiful farm in the village of Leiper's Fork, TN. The workshop location is called "Crossfire Farm," owned by Preston and Beth Ingram, 5540/5550 Leiper’s Creek Rd, Franklin, TN. Leiper's Fork is a very picturesque village that offers a step back in time to anyone who is lucky enough to find this remarkable place.  The village is enjoyed by visitors from all over the world and some very famous residents, including top musicians, actors, and others.  The theme of Thompson's workshop is "Values are as important in paintings as they are in life.”  While emphasizing values, he will also cover composition, aerial perspective, edges, photographing artwork, etc.  As usual, he will be doing a demo and individual critiques of participants‘ work. All levels of painters are welcome; the attendance will be limited to 12 to 15 participants. Your check for $50, payable to the Chestnut Group, should be mailed to Ms. Rachel Blair, 240 Boxmere Place, Nashville, TN 37215. After you register you will receive a supply list (which includes standard plein air supplies). To see a list of all other Chestnut Workshop instructors, check out the total workshop offering at the Bulletin Board on the Chestnut Group web site. You will need to scroll down until you see the section titled "Paint Your Heart Out Workshops." You do not have to be a member of the Chestnut Group in order to participate in the workshops.
